The ASTDN Public Health Preparedness Committee is pleased to announce that it has completed its work on revising the ASTDN position paper on “The Role of Public Health Nurses in Emergency Preparedness and Response”. The ASTDN Executive Committee approved the revisions on November 16, 2007.

The purpose of this position paper is to provide national guidance during emergencies to all public health nurses in the United States and its Territories. This guidance describes the roles and actions public health nurses must take to protect the health and safety of communities, families, and individuals during emergencies. This position paper will be useful in clarifying the expertise that public health nurses can contribute to teams that serve to protect the health and safety of communities against disaster threats and realities.

The ASTDN vision for emergency preparedness is that every community, family, and individual will have a comprehensive emergency preparedness plan that minimizes the consequences of disasters and emergencies and enables communities, families, and individuals to respond and recover.

A color poster will soon be available upon request that accompanies this position paper. To request a copy of the color poster please email the ASTDN Administrative Assistant, Janet Deveny-Edwards at janetkd@health.ok.gov please include your mailing address so the poster can be mailed to you.
