Utilizing Partnerships to Enhance Practice and Education in Public Health Nursing

A Joint meeting of the Association of State & Territorial Directors of Nursing (ASTDN) and the Association of Community Health Nursing Educators (ACHNE), May 30-June 3, 2007, Hyatt Regency Crown Center, Kansas City, MO

The 2007 annual meeting of ASTDN was held jointly with ACHNE. Joint meetings of the two organizations are held every three years. The 2007 meeting was hosted by the state of Kansas.

The meeting included a very informative program and opportunities to network with colleagues in both education and practice.

ASTDN members began the meeting with new member orientation, dinner and a business meeting on Wednesday, May 30th.

The program on Thursday featured the following:

  • A National Voluntary Public Health Accreditation Program: Striving for Consensus - Kaye Bender, PhD, RN, FAAN, Dean & Professor, University of Mississippi Medical Center
  • Missouri Accreditation Journey: A Partnership - Kathleen Wojciehowski, MA, JD, Executive Director, Missouri Institute for Community Health
  • Public Health Challenges and Priorities: Nursing Opportunities for Partnerships - Carol Romano, PhD, RN, FAAN, Assistant Surgeon General, Chief Nurse Officer, U.S. Public Health Service
  • Partnerships Examples From The Field - Michael Bleich, RN, PhD, CNAA, BC, FAAN, University of Kansas School of Nursing and Cynthia Hornberger, PhD, ARNP-CS, MBA, Washburn University School of Nursing.

Following the presentations, regional groups discussed examples of partnerships in their region, both current and potential

The day ended with a networking reception and poster presentations.

The Friday program included presentations and discussions about current public health nursing issues:

  • ACHNE Task Force reports on BSN Essentials for Practice and Advanced Practice Nursing for Public Health Nurses
  • Report about current HRSA grants for public health nursing continuing education by Irene Sandoval, DrPH, CNM, Acting Branch Chief, Advance Nurse Education Branch, HRSA.
  • Roundtable Discussion of Current Issues:
    • Quad Council Nursing Shortage Paper-Derryl Block
    • Public Health Enumeration Study-Barbara Hickok
    • ANA Initiative for Legislation to Support PHN-Michelle Cravetz
    • PHN Certification-Sandra Brennan
    • PHN Recruitment & Retention-Linda Olson Keller
  • The ASTDN Transformation Journey: What To Leave Behind and What To Take Forward-Carole Jakeway
  • Enhancing The Capacity of Public Health Nursing Through Partnerships
    • Understanding the CDC Cooperative Agreement-Joy Reed
    • Products and Outcomes Year One-Linda Olson Keller
    • Sharing the CDC Visit Experience-Joy Reed
    • New Opportunities for the Future-Pat Drehobl & Beth Stover

The Saturday morning session included continuation of ASTDN business meeting with a special report and discussion of the CDC Cooperative Agreement.

Lunch included the traditional state gift exchange and presentation of ASTDN awards. The Award of Merit was presented to Glenda Kelly and the Special Recognition Award to Rita Gallagher.

The afternoon emergency preparedness program included the following:

  • BioSense Program-Lynn Steele, MS, CIC, Director Division of Emergency Preparedness and Response National Center for Health Informatics and Service, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • Presentation of Revised ASTDN PHN Role in Emergency Preparedness and Response Draft Paper
  • American Red Cross Presentation: ARC & HHS Sheltering Tool Guidance Document and Training Opportunities
  • Best Practice Presentations
    • Public Health Nursing Surge Curriculum
    • Overview of Florida’s Special Needs Sheltering, Asset Typing and Supporting Materials
  • Emergency Preparedness Resource Listing

The meeting concluded Sunday with the final business meeting and installation of officers.

As always the meeting was fun, memorable and very informative. Networking with ASTDN and ACHNE colleagues was priceless.
