Finding and Using Health Statistics: A Self-Study Course - The National Information Center on Health Services Research and Health Care Technology (NICHSR) of the National Library of Medicine has added this distance learning program to its Web site.  This course will provide librarians, health services researchers, and public health professionals with some basic concepts for understanding health statistics, as well as pointing to some invaluable Internet portals.

Massachusetts Health Data Consortium - The Consortium works with hospitals, government planners, employers, purchasers, labor, HMOs, insurers and academic researchers to produce reports relating to: the health status of the population, marketing and planning of health services, the socioeconomic characteristics of the population, community needs, health facilities, services and manpower, and private and public sector health insurance plans.  A good resource for health data tools and reports and information on health data standards issues.
MCH Analytic Skills Online is a cooperative agreement with the Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).  Located at the University of Illinois at Chicago, School of Public Health, Center for the Advancement of Distance Education (CADE), the project uses internet-based technologies to develop and disseminate analytic skills training for maternal and child health (MCH) and children with special health care needs (CSHCN) professionals.

Assessing Roles, Responsibilities, and Activities in a Managed Care Environment: A Workbook for Local Health Officials - Available from the federal Agency for Health Care and Quality (AHRQ).  It offers a step-by-step guide to assessing, analyzing, and implementing successful health department programs at the local level. The workbook guides readers through the process of developing a strategic plan for their local health department, including sections on cataloging the LHD's current mission statement, activities and capabilities; determining managed care-related changes taking place at community, state and federal levels, and identifying new approaches and opportunities for carrying out core public health services.

Assuring the Health of the Public in the 21st Century is a follow-up to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) 1988 report, The Future of Public Health.  The IOM is conducting an 18-month Department of Health and Human Services interagency-sponsored study that will consider how best to assure the health of the public in the 21st century.  The Committee on Assuring the Health of the Public in the 21st Century is charged with "describing a new, more inclusive framework for assuring population-level health that can be effectively communicated to and acted upon by diverse communities."

National Health Information Center (NHIC)  - NHIC is a health information referral service of the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP).  Resources for health professionals and consumers include listings of all Federal Health Information Centers and Clearinghouses, Toll-Free Numbers for Health Information, and National Health Observances.

National Institutes of Health Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases National Resource Center - Provides patients, health professionals, and the public with an important link to resources and information on metabolic bone diseases, including osteoporosis, Paget's disease of the bone, osteogenesis imperfecta, and hyperparathyroidism.
