President's Message
Message from the President

Glynnis LaRosa
ASTDN President

Glynnis LaRosa, RN, MPH, CPHQ
President, ASTDN, May 2011

It is with pride and enthusiasm that I begin my term as the ASTDN President. I wish to acknowledge President Clair Millet who led our association this past year. Because of her knowledge and dedication, Clair has left big shoes for me to fill. I would like to thank Clair on behalf of all ASTDN members for her hard work and leadership.

This year's annual ASTDN meeting in Columbus, Ohio was a wonderful educational experience for us all. It was great to see so many public health nursing colleagues in Ohio and we missed those members who were unable to be with us this year. During the conference two ASTDN Award recipients were honored: Sharon Stanley, PhD, RN, RS received the Recognition award and Sharon Moffatt, RN, BSN, MSN received the Merit award. Due to the generosity of Ohio DOH staff we were able to videotape the PHN Leadership event on May 2nd and the Continuing Education Day on May 3rd. The May 2011 conference information including the video archive link, slides, photos, state and committee reports will be posted soon. Thank you to Sam Chapman and her Ohio PHN team for hosting!

At the conclusion of the annual meeting the 2011-12 ASTDN Executive Committee was announced. Please join me in congratulating the new ASTDN Board members.

  • Lisette K. Osborne, RN, MSN, APRN-BC, President-Elect (MD)
  • Tom Engle, RN, MN, Treasurer (OR)
  • Julie McMahon, RN, BSN, Secretary (IA)
  • Clair Millet, APRN, MN, PHNCNS-BC, Past-President (LA)
  • Bobbie Bagley, RN, MPH, CPH, Member at Large (NH)
  • Juanita Graham, RN, MSN, Member at Large (MS)
  • John Hankins, RN, MBA, Member at Large (AL)

ASTDN is very fortunate to have a committed and experienced staff that does much of the behind the scenes work to keep the organization running efficiently. I would like to thank them for their work throughout the year. It is important for you to know who these valuable staff members are.

  • Karen O'Brien, DNP, MN, APRN-BC, Executive Director
  • Janet DeVeny-Edwards, CPM, Administrative Assistant
  • Glenda Kelly, RN, MSN, Communications Coordinator
  • John McDaniel, Webmaster

There are many goals that I hope to achieve this year with the help of the ASTDN Board, staff and members. Some of my goals include:

  • Increasing organizational funding opportunities by working with Karen O'Brien and the Resource Development workgroup.
  • Fostering existing and establishing new public health partnerships & collaborations.
  • Enhancing communication by collaborating with Glenda Kelly and the Communications Committee.
  • Expanding ASTDN membership by working with Bobbie Bagley and the Membership Committee.
  • Pursuing and offering PHN Leadership educational opportunities.

I ask that you become actively involved with ASTDN if you are not already. Please take some time to share your talents and skills with your national PHN leadership organization. ASTDN is only as strong as its members, and each member's commitment to ASTDN will ensure that ASTDN remains strong and continues its important mission into the future. There are many ways to become involved: sign up for a committee; help plan the 2012 annual ASTDN conference to be held next year in Austin, Texas; become a regional representative; or run for a Executive Committee position, to name just a few.

I promise to work hard for ASTDN and the public health nursing members across the US. I am available via email Glynnis.LaRosa@state.ma.us or by phone at 617-983-6569. I hope to hear from you.

I thank you for your work in public health nursing. I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together to advance public health nursing and public health nursing leadership across the country.
